The English setter has a new reason to put on a long face. One of Britain's oldest dog breeds, the setter has been placed on the UK Kennel Club vulnerable breeds list. Only 234 setter puppies were registered last year, a 33% decline since 2010, and an overall steady decline for the last decade. Why? Call it the "Paris Hilton" effect. These days Brits are favoring "hand bag" pups like Chihuahuas, 6000 of which were registered to the UK Kennel Club just last year. Breeders cite the influence of celebrities from Hilton to the Queen, who have favored the fad of small dogs. Registrations of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, which is on the vulnerable breeds list, skyrocketed 134% last year after the so-called "Royal Wedding Effect," as the Queen owns a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Now, if only we could get celebrities other than Siegfried and Roy to adopt Siberian Tigers.
