何よりもまずこのアルバムで語られるのがBootsy Collinsの加入という事柄だと思うのだけれど、実際この時期はあくまでサポート的な役割や、楽曲の提供がほとんどで、完全にBootsyが中心人物の一人となっていくのは74年頃から。だが、Bootsyが加わった事実というのは、このP-Funkにとって非常に大きな影響を及ぼしたのだろうと、この作品を聴いていて感じる事となった。前作、名盤"Maggot Brain"を覆い尽くしていた、泥沼のような粘着質な混沌としたサウンドが、明らかにこのアルバムでタイトに引き締まっている。総帥George Clinton自身、音楽を確立していく方向性がより明確になった一つのきっかけになったのではないだろうか？

この"America Eats Its Young"は、後のFunkadelicには勿論、Parliamentにも通じるサウンドがあるように思う。それだけに、中途半端に目立たない作品になってしまったけれど、クオリティは以前の彼らの作品に比べると明らかに跳ね上がっているし、魅力的な楽曲も多い。オープニングの"You Hit The Nail On The Head"や、"A Joyful Process"はこれまでになかった、ゴリゴリの熱っぽいファンクサウンド。Parliamentの"Osmium"に収録されていた名曲"I Call My Baby Pussycat"のセルフカバーなんかは、Funkadelicの良いサイケ色が出た作品だと思うし、"Biological Speculation"なんかは今聴くと隠れた名曲であるように思う。

LP2枚組みのアルバムであり、そのボリュームに加え、元々濃ゆいバンドだけあって、全部を聴くのに少々疲れてしまう難点はあるけれど、充分聴き応えあるアルバムだと思う。

間違いなく、ジャンルに拘わらず２０世紀最高のギターが聴ける名盤です。
